誰かもしくは何かを聞く、またはそれらに聞かれるには遠すぎる：ぼくたちは議論をする前に、ちゃんと声が届かない距離にテッドが行くまで待った。
earshot は「声の届く距離」。その距離より外になるので out of earshot で「声の届かない距離」という意味。
No sooner were they out of earshot than Malfoy burst into laughter.
二人がもう声の届かないところまで行ったとたん、マルフォイは大声で笑い出した。
