Tip of the Week No.169 ‘branch’

今週紹介する単語は ‘branch’
動詞と名詞としての意味がありますが、名詞として使われることが多い単語。
ただ名詞としての意味はOxfordの辞書を見ると6種類もあります！

branch n.
of tree
of company
of government
of knowledge
of river/road
of family

と載ってあります。
おそらく、もともとの意味は of tree のほう。
a part of a tree that grows out from the main stem and on which leaves, flowers and fruit grow
本体の幹から伸び、葉や花、実を出す部分

つまり、本来は「枝」を意味します。

ただ、そこから派生して、支店 (of company)、部署 (of government)、文科 (of knowledge)、支流 (of river/road)、分家 (of family) としても使われます。
よく目にするのは of tree、of company、of government の3つです。

ちなみに brunch は breakfast と lunch が合わさったもの。
朝食と昼食兼用のことです。
