横隔膜のけいれんによって起きる、喉からでる音。強めで、複数回続き、自分の意志で止めることができない。
説明を見てもあまりピンとこないかもしれませんが、hiccup とはしゃっくりのことです。
通常 hiccups と表現されます。
I ate too quickly and got the hiccups.
急いで食べたのでしゃっくりが出た。
もう一つおもしろい使い方があります。
There was a slight hiccup in the timetable.
この場合の hiccup は (informal) a small problem or temporary delay という意味で使われています。
ですので、訳すると 時刻表にわずかな遅れが出ていました。となります。
