Tip of the Week No.148 ‘(a) catch-22’

辞書をペラペラめくっていたらたまたま目についたフレーズを紹介します。

(a) catch-22 idm. (informal)
a difficult situation from which there is no escape because you need to do one thing before doing a second, but you need to do the second thing before you can do the first: I can’t get a job because I haven’t got anywhere to live but I can’t afford a place to live until I get a job-it’s a catch-22 situation.

2つ目の行動に向けてあることをする必要があるけれど、初めの行動をするにあたって2つ目の行動をする必要があるという逃げ場がない難しい状況のこと：住むところがないから仕事を見つけられないんだけど、仕事が見つかるまで住居を持つ余裕がありません。板挟みというヤツです。
(a) catch-22 簡単に言うと「板挟み」状態のことをいいます。
